As I was canvassing this morning's news stories, I came across two interesting bits and pieces (the second is from today, the first is not). Kosovo has yet to issue its own passports, although one of my students told me that she expects to get her new passport within the month. Right now, people are still travelling either on UNMIK or Serbian passports. I've been looking to try to find out which countries recognize the UNMIK passports, but haven't found a credible source (although the most oft cited number seems to be 40).

Kosovo unveils new passport
Keep in mind, too, the small size of Kosovo (about the size of greater Los Angeles). Without functioning passports, there is not a lot of avilable mobility space. Plus, there is the additional issue of recognition. Countries that do not recognize Kosovo will not accept Kosovar travel documents. Since the demise of Yugoslavia, travel options for Kosovars have been reduced. My perception of space may be a bit off, but I liken it to being restricted to the area between Reno and Minden (with 2 million people spread throughout).
