Prizren Does Mexican...Sorta

I made a great find yesterday: a Mexican restaurant. Not just a Mexican restaurant in Kosovo (I hear there's one up in Pristina) but a Mexican restaurant in Prizren. The place is called Mexam and it is tucked off the main Shadervan square on a small side street across from the Orthodox church.

I was so excited I wasn't sure what to order: tacos or enchilladas. (Also on offer: quesadillas.) I went the enchillada route. I wasn't expecting authentic Mexican, so I wasn't disappointed. However, the enchilladas were pretty good. A little too garlicky for my taste (I was still tasting garlic when I woke up this morning), but pretty good. Three small tortillas were rolled up with a chicken/veggie stirfry, topped with a small bit of cheese, and baked a bit. I would have liked a bit of sauce and cilantro and pico de gallo, but for Kosovo, it was pretty good.

I asked the owner/cook where he bought his tortillas to which he replied, "I make them." I then asked him if I could buy five from him. He seemed a little surprised that I would want to, and he didn't want to tell me how much I should pay him, but the transaction was successful and I'm going to make myself a (small) breakfast burrito shortly.

That's amazing. Mexican can be hard to find. When I worked in Cleveland it took weeks to find a Mexican restaurant. When I did I was sooo disappointed in the extremely expensive meal. Taco Bell was more authentic.

Introduce them to sopapilla's!

Viva Prizren. Muy Bien.
