Last week I was in Turkey with a colleague of mine and
another guy who’s in Georgia as an English Teaching Assistant with the
Fulbright Program. Our first night in Harran, we sat down to dinner at a place
near our hotel around 10 pm. We
were the only people in the restaurant, and when we got up to pay, the waiter
and another guy came over and started asking us where we were from. Then one of
them started pointing at us and saying, “Baba? Anne (ah-ney)? Baba?” It took me
a moment before I realized he was asking if we were a family (ie: Me? I’m the
anne, or mother….my colleague the father….and the Fulbrighter the son). Of
course, we laughed it off, but now that I’ve seen this picture (which was a self-timer pic the Fulbrighter took of us up at the Sumela Monastery), I can
understand their assumption a bit better. Heh.
