Homemade Kosovar Wine: 2/26/11

During my stay in Kosovo, I spent one night in a small village in the Rahovec region. This area is the wine-producing area of Kosovo. The family I stayed with had made a sweet homemade wine last fall with a combination of grapes from their vineyards ones they'd purchased. The wine was highly drinkable (and slightly potent) and proved to be a great digestif after a hearty meal of spinach, rice, and homemade pickles & bread. The wine itself was bottled in plastic bottles because glass wine bottles are expensive and difficult to obtain and purchasing a corker and corks is not affordable. Labels prove to be another cost barrier. However, the wine they produced was surprisingly good. Over the course of the fall, the family sold around 800 liters of it to the local community (I didn't ask how much they sold it for, but my guess would be less than a Euro per liter). I will no longer scoff at wine from a pet bottle.
