The Old Hillside Cemetery
You'd never know it, but some famous Renoites are buried here: Frank Orr, George Peckham, and Edmund Plumb among them. I shot the video overlooking one of the public grave tracts. Years ago, before fences were erected, the cemeteries were a disaster area. Broken headstones littered the plots and it was not uncommon for people to drive through the cemetery (it is located in the area behind Lambda Chi Alpha, Tau Kappa Epsilon and what used to be Alpha Tau Omega fraternities). Things are looking much cleaner these days, but access to the cemeteries is limited: with fences came locks. It is possible to access the Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery and the Hebrew Cemetery. The Hebrew Cemetery is well looked-after and the grounds are tended. All-in-all, the area is looking much cleaner and less vandalized. I love cemeteries and this one, which is Reno's oldest, is one of my favorites (the Jewish Cemetery in Pristina, Kosovo being another favorite).
