A Pristina Saturday

I woke up yesterday with nothing to do. Sure, I could have vacuumed, done laundry, cleaned the bathroom: general housekeeping-type stuff. But where's the fun in that? I dragged myself downstairs for a cup of coffee and as soon as I sat down to drink it, the power went out. That sealed it. I got dressed and went out and caught the bus to Pristina.

The ride was non-descript. If I had been thinking, I would have grabbed a book before heading out the door. But the 90 minutes passed quickly. When I arrived in Pristina, I had no plan so I headed for the Furra Lumi bakery to see if they had any pumpkin burek. I didn't think they would because it's no longer pumpkin season and I was right. There was spinach burek and cabbage burek, neither of which I was in the mood for. I decided to branch out and try something else, the name of which escapes me. It was a kind of savory cake with a layer of spinach in the middle. It was horrible. Too salty and not at all tasty. I tried three bites and left.

Disappointed, I wandered around a bit wondering what else I could do. I stopped by Vogue Hair to see if Armend could fit me in. Very luckily, I was able to snag an appointment with only a 10 minute wait. He scoffed at me a bit for having someone else cut my hair while I was in the US (someone who ruined the shape he had given me previously), but he whipped my hair back into shape and I am once again very happy I went to see him. Plus, I really can't argue with the 13 Euro price tag ($16.70).

I met up with some Albanian friends and we decided to go for lunch. I suggested the Odyssea Bistro. I'm not sure why...I had been there in July and had a very disappointing meal. It just popped out of my mouth. We went, though. Hardly anybody was in the restaurant and we had the pick of tables. Each of us decided on a hamburger. Really, the burger seemed too good to pass up. A 200 gram mix of ground beef and lamb on a homemade bun? I asked for emmentaler cheese and grilled onions & mushrooms on mine.

The result? Very, very good. In fact, this burger was far better than the turkey burgers I used to lust after at the Bridgetender in South Lake Tahoe. The burgers were fat, the fries homecut, and there was a side of 1000 island-type sauce for dipping. Although the place is upscale for Kosovo, it was 30 Euros ($38.50) for four burgers, four cokes, one cherry juice, and one cup of tea. Very reasonable I thought and we all left very, very, very full of burger.

I stopped by a grocery store on the way home to see if I could hunt down some Philadelphia cream cheese. No luck. I did, however, find oatmeal which has been sadly missing from the Prizren stores lately.

All-in-all, it was a good day. I was a bit bummed at the disappointment given to me by Furra Lumi, but the haircut and burger were worth the trip to the city.

Today I think I'm going to kick back and watch movies. There's a video rental place just down the street from me that I finally went into on Friday. He rents DVDs for 50 cents per night and he has a decent selection of titles. Up for today: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. I'm not even going to ask him where he copies his DVDs from.
