I love pie, especially berry pie (and pecan pie and lemon meringue pie). But good pie is hard to find. The last time Ken and I drove over to Davis to see his dad, I convinced him to stop at Ikeda's in Auburn so we could have some (it wasn't hard to do). Eagerly, I bought a piece of berry pie, took it outside, and dug in. It was passable, but nothing notable. The crust was a little chewy and the filling sugary and tasteless. But even bad pie is good pie and it scratched my craving.
Yesterday as I was unloading the 4Runner, I had a sudden desire for pie, good pie. I thought about my options but didn't feel like going out to a restaurant or buying a pre-made pie (although Marie Callendar does do a good berry cobbler you can get from the frozen section at the supermarket). I thought to heck with it...I'd just make my own pie. From scratch.
I've always found pie crusts to be enigmatic....fickle....difficult. I had heretofore never been brave enough to make one and always used store-bought ones. But I was in the mood to bake yesterday, and I decided to conquer my fear of the failed, chewy, flabby crust. I hopped online, first to the Splendid Table website (a recent NPR discovery) where I found nothing, and then over to Epicurious (my trusty standby).
I hit the pie crust jackpot. The recipe was simple, quick, and very, very tasty. And the pie filling....oooh....blueberry pie with a marzipan topping. Mmm-mmm. In fact, making the pie was so easy I can't believe I've never done it before. Sigh. I love pie. Especially good pie.
