Hard Hiking Dog

On Friday Skeena & I headed out to Spooner Summit and hiked south along the Tahoe Rim Trail. Our destination: the bench with the most spectacular views of the lake.
The Bench.

The Lake.

And other hike-related pics:

And, of course, there's no rest for the wicked. Yesterday, Saturday, Ken & Skeena & I drove down to 89, and hung a right on the dirt road that'll take you up to Horse Meadows. It was Ken's birthday and we decided to make a three-peaks-in-one-hike day out of it. We parked and started up a steep trail, not the one we were intending to start on, and kept walking to Job's Peak, did a little cross country over to Job's Sister, and followed the trail on to Freel. We eventually connected to the Tahoe Rim Trail and left it to head down Armstrong Pass. Our trek (almost) ended where we had intended to start hiking, and we had a 20 minute-or-so walk back up to the 4Runner. Considering the cross-country bit we did heading up Job's Sister, we did the hike in the better direction, I think (I find it much easier to walk up a steep, sandy, sometimes slippery slope than to try to negiotiate down it).

Of course, I didn't have my camera or phone with me for pictures. But it was a bee-you-tee-ful day. All three summits gave us very rewarding views of Carson Valley to one side and Lake Tahoe to the other. It was clear enough to see over to Yosemite. The only downside was that going up and down Job's Sister, the wind was blowing so hard, it blew the snot right out of my nose. Lovely thought, I know, but it was howling. The dog didn't seem to have much problem, but Ken & I held on to each other part of the way just to keep our feet on the ground.

The entire trip took us about 8 hours. We definitely didn't go the quickest way. There are use trails connecting the three peaks, but we managed not to stay on them and had a few sections of steep and sandy traversing. However, it was a great day. Especially considering we started it with bacon and my edible but somewhat failed version of a Spanish tortilla (you may also know it as a frittata or a non-flip omelet). How can a day that starts with bacon be bad?
