This picture is of a fisherman I ran into while walking along the river in Kaihin Makuhari.
There have been two fairly large earthquakes in the past week. On Sunday we had a 5.1 and on Wednesday we shook a 6.5. The only injuries reported during Wednesday's quake was that of a woman who rolled out of bed and cut her nose. On Wednesday, my mom had sent me an email detailing the 'triangle of life' approach to surviving earthquakes. The gist being that instead of ducking under a table that may get smashed and squish you, you should huddle against a wall because an air pocket will likely be created if anything falls against it. As things were rolling off my dining table, this email was flashing before my eyes and I ended up doing what I usually do, and that's ducking under the doorway. I feel about earthquakes the way I feel about bears...I'd be perfectly happy if I never saw another. However, there's lots of talk about how Tokyo is overdue for a big one, and if a big one should come, 11,000 people will die. I wonder how many people are dying in Tokyo on a regular day any way? Hmmm....Considering that Tokyo itself has a population of about 12 million-ish (the greater Tokyo area has around 33.4 million), 11,000 people dying in a big earthquake isn't a whole lot.
